Terry Ambrose is back with a new Seaside Cove mystery!

All ten-year-old Alexandra Atwood wants for Christmas is to get her dad and the B&B’s cook Marquetta under the mistletoe. After all, how can they get married if they don’t kiss first?

When murder strikes in Seaside Cove, bed-and-breakfast owner Rick Atwood is asked to help find the killer. But this will not be an easy case to crack. Not only did the killer contaminate the crime scene, but there are suspects all over town. And they all received the same Christmas sweater from the victim.

Alex hears rumors about the murder and decides that since she’s on Christmas break, she has time for a little multitasking. She launches her own investigation even as she continues her efforts to get her dad and Marquetta together.

Just when Rick thinks he’s identified all the suspects, he discovers a new one—his estranged wife. With the days until Christmas ticking down, Rick feels pressured from all sides. He needs to solve the case. He needs to send his wife back to New York. But the one thing he doesn’t need is for his daughter to be one step ahead of him and the cops.

Character Interview: Alexandra Atwood

Alexandra, welcome to Island Confidential. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name’s Alexandra Atwood, but everybody calls me Alex. I’m almost eleven and I’m in fifth grade. I’m super good at figuring out murders, but my math sucks. Ever since Marquetta gave me a journal and told me it was for my innermost thoughts, I’ve been writing in it more and more.

Right now, Marquetta’s our cook here at the B&B, but someday I want her to be my mom ‘cause she’s awesome and we totally get along and she’s really pretty. Marquetta and Daddy are in love with each other, but they’re being totally lame about it. Maybe you can help me out, Miss Bow. You’re like super smart ‘cause you’re a professor—how can I get them to kiss and get married?

Great question, Alex. If that were actually my area of expertise…well, my classes would be a lot more popular. And I’d probably be using a different textbook.

I gotta work fast ‘cause there’s like twenty-two mothers in Seaside Cove who want their daughters to marry my dad.

I hear you. Anyway, can you tell me who your friends are in the book?

Me and Daddy totally get along, but Marquetta’s the one who understands me the best. Me and her have a lot in common ‘cause she lost her dad when she was my age and my real mom hasn’t been around for most of my life. Daddy says we bonded right away, but that totally seems like a dad thing to say. The truth is, me and Marquetta understand each other ‘cause we’re both girls. When I grow up, I wanna be just like her.

That sounds lovely. Do you get along with everyone?

I’m super personable, so I have a lot of friends. Besides, I’m like ten, so who’s not gonna not get along with me? Wouldn’t that be like child abuse or something if someone was mean to me?

Fair point.  Hey, just between you and me: What do you really think of your author?

My author’s kinda old, but he’s fun, too. I totally let him think he’s in control of things ‘cause he gets super mad when things don’t work out. There was this one time when he like thought he wasn’t gonna let me solve the murder before the cops, but I turned things around and made him write more of my scenes. That totally made the book way better than what he was planning.

Yeah, sometimes a character has to stand up for herself. You don’t want authors starting to think they’re in charge. So what’s next for you?

I want to be able to ride the bicycle I got for Christmas all over Seaside Cove. It would be awesome to be able to explore everything with my friends. Who knows, we might even find clues to another murder!
